On other movie news, it has long been rumored that Tom’s in the running to be the next James Bond since Daniel Craig has stepped down from that lofty pedestal, right along side such names as Idris Elba, Rege-Jean Page and Tom Hardy. Hiddleston fans, such as myself, hold our collective breath and keep our fingers and toes crossed that our beloved Brit will indeed be awarded that honor most high.
It is obvious to me, though, from a 2021 interview with Tom on the subject of 007, if the actors know which one has been chosen, they are certainly not telling. Tom is quoted as saying, “What can I say that you don’t already know? It’s interesting in itself that I’ve suddenly become very aware of what I’m saying, is it not? Because there’s something about what I’m saying that becomes the story. Not for you, but for the world outside. Whatever I say, I’ve found generated more questions.”
Sounds like a lot of misdirection and slickly avoiding the question, to me. Idris Elba was a bit more straightforward, not about whether the part had been offered to him, but that he wouldn’t take it if it was. “I am 50 this year.” He’s quoted as saying. “Let’s say you sign up for three films – nobody wants to see Bond giving chase or beating up bad guys when he’s 60. I am probably too old to take on the role now.”
I beg to differ, Idris. Does the name Sean Connery ring any bells? Anyway, best of luck to Tom. For a British actor, Bond is the pinnacle, and I can’t think of anyone more deserving!
